Last week, the REC released data which found that in the fourth quarter of 2022, employers were continuing to utilise temporary staff to fill jobs in the face of economic uncertainty and ongoing labour shortages. It also noted a continuing uptick in anticipated demand for temporary agency workers into 2023. REC Chief Executive, Neil Carberry highlighted how, ‘on any given day there are 1.2 million people who are working via a recruitment business on a contract or temporary assignment’, of which there are many working in hospitality.
Whilst a solution to hiring issues in hard times, there are many positives to including temporary recruitment as part of a company’s long term hiring strategy. Here are a few of the benefits:
Speed up the hiring process
Temporary recruitment is a fantastic way to speed up your hiring process. Agencies typically have a large pool of staff; whose skills have already been verified, with great availability, who are ready to get to work, sometimes within the week. In contrast, direct recruitment can involve a period of advertising, attracting candidates, interviewing, and then waiting out notice periods. For hospitality in particular, demand for cover can be immediate and temporary recruitment offers a speedy solution.
Enables quick upscale
When business is booming, the need to upscale can be sudden. In hospitality in particular, good review or mention from an industry leader can lead to sudden demand that if successfully met, will rocket the business towards a bright future. Having an accessible source of additional labour can help meet challenges when they arise.
Bring in fresh skills
Mobile talent brings a whole range of skills they have picked up from their nomadic experience of work. Temporary talent tends to have a broader experience of tasks, clients’ needs, and can adapt well to new environments. All these skills can be used to benefit the business.
