It can be a very rewarding experience to work with children or vulnerable people, knowing that you are helping those who need support the most. As there is a level of responsibility required in these positions, you must demonstrate that you are safe to work through an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, when applying for these roles.
At Enhance Catering, we are specialists in DBS-cleared catering roles.
Applying for a DBS-cleared catering role may involve a different process to those you have undertaken in the past, therefore we want to help you know what to expect. It’s largely the same as any other job application, but with a few additional checks to make sure you are the right person for the role.
Of course, if you already have an Enhanced DBS Certificate, your registration process will skip this step, as we can obtain details of your up-to-date certificate right away.
Let’s break it down:

You might see roles with Enhance Catering Recruitment on our website, on Caterer, on Facebook, or through a Return to Work scheme. You can apply right away with a few details about your experience and the roles you are interested in.
Initial phone screening
A member of our friendly team will give you a call to establish your industry experience, availability for work and level of spoken English. You will receive a Key Information Document that outlines how we work, how you will get paid, and information about holiday pay.
Alongside ascertaining that you have the required Right to Work documents, our team will also check that you are happy to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate. This is a full background check, so it’s important that we have your permission to request an Enhanced DBS check on your behalf. Alternatively, if you are already registered with the DBS Update Service, we will get your permission to view your certificate.
If you do have a police record, this is not an immediate fail but, we may be required to disclose details of the offence to future employers.
Pre-registration
To start, we ask you to complete all the necessary documentation, training and consent needed for your work profile.
Compliance
This is where your application starts to differ from a non-DBS cleared role. However, the process is very simple, led by our team, and you will be updated on progress every step of the way.
You first supply us with information which we will check against uComply scanning software, to verify authentication of your documents. You will also receive a video call to ensure you are the person in your documents.
For Chefs, we require proof of National Insurance, proof of address and a Level 2 Hygiene and Allergen Certificates. For Catering Assistants we also require proof of National Insurance and proof of address, alongside an Allergen and Manual Handling Test.
Training
We will verify or complete the necessary training that will support and allow you to do your job.
References
We will ask for two references from previous employers, or through your Enhanced DBS check. If this is your first role, education references may also be suitable.
Obtaining your Enhanced DBS Certificate
You will receive an email link to complete your application for an Enhanced DBS check. Once completed, we will verify your documents and wait for the checks to be carried out through the government platform.
Welcome to Enhance Catering!
Upon successful completion and passing of the Enhanced DBS check, you will receive access to our Benefit Hub, which offers discounts at a range of shops and restaurants, as well as on cinema tickets and insurance. If you do not successfully pass the check, unfortunately we won’t be able to work with you this time, but there are plenty of other opportunities across the industry that might be more suitable.
Job Offers
It’s time to get to work! You will begin to receive offers of work in the areas to which you have applied. The friendly Enhance Catering team will be with you every step of the way to support you at work, and help with any queries you may have.
